Makeshift olive cloak and No shirt: should the trait penalize it?

Windows public Demo · sources checked October 23, 2026 · v50 notes credit the fix to v49.10f6

The short answer

The Makeshift olive cloak is intended to be exempt from the “No shirt, no shoes, no problems” trait’s clothing unhappiness calculation. The developer explains that cloaks leave the character’s chest uncovered. The October 22 v50.00ef announcement says the calculator incorrectly ignored that exemption and credits its fix to v49.10f6.

Use that explicit explanation when deciding whether this particular cloak should trigger the penalty. It does not establish that all clothing is exempt or that an unhappy character’s only possible cause is this item.

Read the explanation beside DAVO-179 and DAVO-180

The two ticket headings describe missing unhappiness and a missing penalty in the cloak description. Read alone, those headings can suggest that a penalty should be added. The explanatory note under both tickets instead says the cloaks were deliberately configured as exceptions and that the unhappiness calculator was wrongly ignoring that setting.

The operational conclusion follows that explanation: do not discard a Makeshift olive cloak solely because you assume every chest-slot item must violate this trait. The announcement does not give a complete trait compatibility table or numeric happiness value.

Check a cloak-related mismatch

  1. Confirm that the item is actually a Makeshift olive cloak and that the character has the named No shirt, no shoes, no problems trait. Similar item names or another trait are outside this specific fix.
  2. Check the normal Steam demo update and note the installed version shown at the title screen. The v50 announcement credits this calculation correction to v49.10f6; its publication date is not the claimed first fix version.
  3. Inspect the item and status information while changing only this cloak where practical. That one-change comparison is an editorial diagnostic suggestion, not our gameplay test or proof that every other happiness source is absent.
  4. If the cloak still produces the named trait penalty on an updated build, record the version, exact item, active trait and observed description or status. Keep a remaining calculation mismatch separate from unrelated hunger, injury or room comfort.

What the exception does not tell you

The note supplies no armor rating, vacuum protection, recipe, exact penalty amount or best-perk ranking. A cloak exemption is not evidence that it makes an exterior route safe, and it is not a general happiness cure.

If the visible problem is low health or Bleeding, use the health triage. For cleaner-room comfort and a usable retreat, use the resting-room checks. Those are separate decisions from whether this item is covered by this trait.
